Garden Care for the Summer

We are in the throes of summer and our gardens are starting to show it, looking overgrown and faded. At Elzy Milling and Trade Ltd., we try to help our customers as much as possible no matter what the question or project is. Here are some tips we hope will help you keep your garden looking fresh and rejuvenated all summer long, while also protecting it from the heat and sun of the season.

One of the best things you can do for your garden in the middle of a sweltering summer is to keep your soil moist. This will help protects the roots of your plants from the heat and provide your plants with the moisture they need. Watering your garden in the morning before the sun has finished rising is the best time of day. Your plants will have the moisture they need throughout the day, and they won't get too hot.

The next thing you can do to protect your garden is to utilize mulch. This not only helps to protect the roots of your plants from the sun, but it will also help them retain moisture and nutrients. Mulch is known as an insulator, so while you can use it in the summer, you can also use it in the winter, protecting from frost and the harsh cold.

Next you will want to make sure that you are keeping up with the weeding in your garden. This is because weeds take up space in your soil bed and this leaves less room and nutrients for the plants you want to grow. You should let your flowers and vegetables have room to breathe and grow so that you can get your best yield yet.

While we are preaching that sunlight is one of those things you need for a healthy garden, there is a thing as too much sunlight. This can be easily solved by purchasing gardening shade from your local garden center, like Elzy Milling and Trade. You can also use alternatives if you have them. This can include things like cloth, old sheets, mesh, or an old screen window. Just make sure that it is lightweight and that the color reflect light instead of absorbing it.

Lastly, you should always keep yourself updated on the weather and what is going on weekly in your area. Knowing when there is going to be a storm, rain, or heatwave will help you protect your garden so that you can get the best out of your hard work. If you have any questions or need any supplies for your garden or home,  stop out at Elzy Milling and Trade LTD. in Bellville, Ohio. We can't wait to help you!
