The Importance of Pond Maintenance

Ponds are one of the most beautiful additions that you can add to the property around your home. There are many different types, but the most common among homeowners is the fishpond. These types of ponds, however, need a lot of maintenance as there are no plants to help filter out the water. Fish make the water dirty and this can cause issues with the ecosystem of your pond if left for too long. Below are some tips on how to keep your pond clean during the summer.

First you will want to make sure that you keep your pond topped off. Adding the necessary amount of water to your pond will keep the pump and skimmer that you use running properly and will help to keep your pond free of debris. The pump will, in turn, keep the water oxygenated enough for your fish.

You could also add some plants to your pond if you don't have any or add more if you do. Not only will this help boost the aesthetic of your pond but will also provide oxygen and a natural filtration to help with the quality along with clarity of your water. Make sure that you are always keeping up with your plants and trimming them or getting rid of dead ones when the time is right so that you can avoid algae blooms.

Another task you will want to make sure to complete is adding the necessary bacteria to your pond that will help compete with the algae. This will help keep your algae levels at bay and help protect your fish for the whole summer. The last thing you want to make sure of is that you are aware of your pond's surroundings. You do not want to use fertilizer in any part of your yard that will runoff into your pond. This will kill any good bacteria or living organisms in your pond, along with your fish, and that is the LAST thing you would want.
